So Obama is leaving the white house soon, and I know I and many others are worried about how the next four years will turn out, but I also think we should try and focus on what positive things we can in this depressing time. Specifically, all the good Obama has done while president.
I’m aware that he was not a perfect leader and made choices I don’t agree with, but again I’m trying to remain positive.
Over the last eight years Obama has:
- Passed the Affordable Care Act, giving nearly 13 million people heath insurance.
- Ended the war in Iraq.
- Repealed the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” law, allowing gay and lesbian people to serve in the army openly for the first time.
- Appointed two women to the Supreme Court, including the first Latina supreme court justice.
- Along with Michelle, made school lunches healthier.
- Expanded stem cell research, which shows promise in treating spinal injuries, among many other areas.
- Signed a hate crimes bill into law, making it a federal crime to assault someone because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
- Committed $3 billion to a climate change prevention fund.
- Provided more than $80 billion towards clean energy investments.
- Set out a plan to try and end the pay gap between men and women.
- Ended Bush torture policies two days after taking office.
- Announced carbon reduction regulations.
- Created over 21 million jobs since January 2010.
- Greatly improved US-Cuba relations.
- Brought the unemployment rate under five percent.
- Appointed more LGBT officials than any other president in history.
- Significantly increased funding for the Violence Towards Women Act.
- Appointed the first transgender person to a cabinet position in history.
And finally:
So if you’re trying to find something to be positive about, look at the progress we’ve made over the last eight years.
